Question 3
What ballistic protection level should I order?

The HOSDB HG1A is an official UK standard protection level designed to defeat a range of ballistic threats from 9mm calibre DM11A1B2 to .357 Magnum projectiles.

The HOSDB HG1A/KR1 is a lightweight UK standard protection level designed to defeat a range of ballistic threats from 9mm calibre DM11A1B2 to .357 Magnum projectiles, combined with KR1 anti-stab protection of 36 joules energy. The Metropolitan Police Authority has recently chosen this protection level for its police officers.

NIJ Level IIIA is worn by most policemen in the US. This is the most acceptable vest in the industry with regards to safety, cost and its ability to be worn as a concealable vest.

Level III and IV require ballistic inserts and are therefore heavier and also more expensive. The plates will provide better blunt trauma protection as well as provide the wearer with the ability to return fire upon impact. These vests are highly desirable under machine gun threats and high velocity rounds.

Please refer to the ballistic test charts for more detailed information about the protection specifications.

Question 4
What about rifle and submachine gun protection?

Rifles and submachine guns are capable of delivering more power to the rounds, thus rendering soft armour ineffective. Therefore we advise the use of hard armour inserts which will upgrade a level IIIA vest to a level III or IV protection in the front and back. EnGarde offers plates made of Dyneema® and ceramics or a combination of both materials to cover the chest or back. Soft body armour vests only provide pistol and shotgun protection.

Question 5
How comfortable is EnGarde body armour?

EnGarde bulletproof vests are as comfortable as they come. They become uncomfortable only in conditions of extreme heat.

Question 6
What materials does EnGarde use for its body armour?

EnGarde's scientifically engineered body armour is of superior quality and is designed for a broad range of uses. For our ballistic package, the ENGARDE-FLEX, we use the polyethylene materials Dyneema® and Spectra@, whilst for our certified NIJ Level IIIA ballistic package, the ENGARDEIIIA-PRO we use Dyneema®. Dyneema® fibre, with the combined properties of 3GPa of Tensile Strength and 172GPa of Modulus, has an excellent absorption coefficient of shock power, and its density of 0.97GR/cm3 is lower than that of water (1GR/cm3). It is regarded as a technologically advanced material, enabling us to make the products lighter than ever before. After the attacks of September 11th, airlines made the decision to reinforce their cockpit doors with Dyneema®. Our new EnGarde body armour is designed for overall use and activity and so not only provides a comfortable fit but it will also provide secure protection for your life the moment you put it on. In the production of our hard armour inserts we use Dyneema®, ramid and ceramic materials.

1. DYNEEMA®
This fibre, with the combined properties of 3GPa of tensile strength and 172GPa of Modulus, has an excellent absorption coefficient of shock power, and its density (0.97GR/cm3) is lower than that of water (1GR/cm3). It is regarded as an advanced technology material enabling us to make the products lighter than before. After the attacks of September 11th, airlines made the decision to reinforce their cockpit doors with Dyneema®. For more information about Dyneema® please visit www.dyneema.com.

2. SPECTRA®.
Spectra®, together with Dyneema®, is one of the world's strongest and lightest fibres. A bright white polyethylene, it is, pound-for-pound, fifteen times stronger than steel, more durable than polyester and has a specific strength that is 40 percent greater than that of aramid fibre. It is manufactured by Honeywell.

3. ARAMID
Aramid fibre (1961) is a fire-resistant and strong synthetic fibre. It is used in aerospace and military applications, for "bullet-proof" body armour fabric and as an asbestos substitute. The term is a shortened form of "aromatic polyamide". It is well-known type of aramid fibre (a para-aramid nylon) and is commonly known by its DuPont trade name, kevlar, or its Teijin trade name twaron. It was developed by Stephanie Kwolek.

4. CERAMICS
Ceramic plates are special bulletproof plates strong enough to protect people from submachine guns. They can protect against 7.62mm full metal-jacketed bullets and U.S. military M80 shot. Ceramic plates are bulletproof plates of great strength which also provide protection against 30 calibre armour-piercing bullets.
